Ernest Shackleton, leader of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition and part of two other Antarctic expeditions, acquired Polaris after her owner's financial trouble. Renamed Endurance after the Shackleton family motto Fortitudine vincimus (By Endurance we Conquer), she sailed intending to accomplish the first land crossing of the Antarctic continent. Edward Adrian Wilson was born in Cheltenham, England on 23 July 1872, second son of a respected Cheltenham medical practitioner. James William Dell was born ca. 1880 at Worthing. In 1895, he joined the Royal Navy and served with the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 (leader Robert Falcon Scott), as able seaman in Discovery .
